Thorold vs St. Catharines: Where Should You Rent?

Thorold and St. Catharines sit right next to each other, and many people searching for a rental look at both. They share a lot, including easy access to Brock, the GO Train and Niagara wine country. But they feel very different day to day. Here’s an honest look at Thorold vs St. Catharines to help you choose.

Size and pace

St. Catharines is Niagara’s largest city, with about 137,000 people as of the 2021 census. It has a busy downtown, more traffic and more of everything: restaurants, shops and events.

Thorold is much smaller, with about 23,800 people in the 2021 census, and it’s one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada. It has a true small-town feel, quieter streets and a historic downtown along the Welland Canal.

Rental options

St. Catharines has more rental buildings overall, but many are older. Thorold has fewer buildings, and newer ones are rare, which is part of why Parkside Living stands out. If you want a brand-new suite with modern finishes, it’s worth looking just past the St. Catharines border.

Space for your money

Newer, larger 2 bedroom units can be hard to find in St. Catharines, especially near downtown. Parkside suites are around 1,000 sq ft, with in-suite laundry and a private balcony or terrace. That’s more room than many renters expect at this price point.

Commuting

It’s close to a tie. The St. Catharines GO Station and Hwy 406 are minutes from Parkside, so you can reach Hamilton, Toronto and the rest of Niagara just as easily from Thorold. Brock University is about 4 km from our building.

Parks and outdoor space

Both have great green space. St. Catharines has Port Dalhousie, Lakeside Park and Montebello Park. Thorold has Decew Falls, Short Hills Provincial Park nearby and the Welland Canal trails. At Parkside, McMillan Park is right outside your door.

Nightlife and dining

This one goes to St. Catharines. Its downtown has more bars, restaurants and live music, plus the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre. The good news is it’s a short drive or ride from Thorold, so you can enjoy it without living in the middle of it.

Schools and families

Families do well in both. Thorold’s smaller size means a close-knit feel, and Parkside is near a local high school and the park, which makes daily routines easy.

So which is right for you?

  • Choose St. Catharines if you want to be in the middle of the action and walk to nightlife.
  • Choose Thorold if you want a quieter home base, more space and newer buildings, with the city still minutes away.
