Getting Your Apartment Ready for a Niagara Winter

Niagara winters are milder than much of Ontario, but they still bring snow, wind and cold snaps. A few small steps in October make the season easier and help keep your hydro bill in check. Here are our favourite apartment winter tips for Parkside Living residents.

Get smart with your thermostat

Parkside is an all-electric building, so heating runs through your hydro bill. A few habits go a long way:

  • Keep the temperature steady instead of cranking it up and down.
  • Lower it a couple of degrees at night or when you’re at work.
  • Keep vents and baseboards clear of furniture and curtains so heat can move freely.

Use your blinds and curtains

Open them on sunny days to let the sun warm your suite. Close them at night to hold in heat. Thermal curtains are an affordable upgrade for bedrooms.

Prep your balcony

Before the first snow, bring in cushions, planters and anything that could blow away in a winter wind. Store lightweight furniture or cover it. A quick sweep now means less ice later.

Plan for winter parking

Once the snow arrives, our snow removal crew needs room to work. Visitor spots #24 and #25 are used for snow clearing in winter, so please ask your guests to use the visitor spot by the entrance pylon instead. Keep a brush, scraper and washer fluid in your car.

Keep the entry clean

Winter boots bring in salt and slush. Put a boot tray and mat inside your door to protect your floors.

Do laundry the smart way

In-suite laundry is a real perk in winter, since you never have to carry a basket through the cold. Wash full loads in cold water and clean the dryer lint trap each time for faster drying and lower hydro use.

Stock a small winter kit

  • Flashlight and spare batteries
  • A phone power bank
  • A few days of water and easy food
  • Warm blankets

Power outages are rare, but it’s nice to be ready.

Report issues early

Notice a draft around a window or a heating issue? Let our team know right away. Small fixes are much easier before the coldest weeks.

Enjoy the season

Winter in Thorold has its perks too. McMillan Park turns into a snowy walk right outside your door, and the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights is a short drive away.
